Thank you for this incredibly timely (sorry) article.

You are absolutely spot on.

When you framed the issue as abdicating our decision-making, it confirmed my thinking.

I experienced this exact trap on Friday night. I was tired, pushing a deadline, and trying to get Claude to adapt a compliance-focused workflow for a new business. It completely derailed, dragging me down a useless 3-hour rabbit hole.

Yesterday, when I finally stepped back to review the mess, I realized why: I had abdicated my decision-making. How? I had fallen headfirst into an authority trap.

Because I was exhausted, I implicitly treated Claude as if it knew more about my own process than I did. I stopped directing and started deferring, and Claude gladly filled that vacuum by making executive decisions I never actually approved.

Today, I’m clearing out its memory files and hard-coding strict guardrails via a claude.md file.

Your piece was the perfect reminder: the moment we treat AI as the authority instead of the assistant, we hand over the wheel.
